Our Story

Horizon Safari Company is a conservation company based in the 10 000 acre Mongena Game Reserve

The reserve is situated in Gauteng Province, and is less than 100km’s from O.R Tambo International airport, making it easily accessible from Johannesburg and Pretoria.

We also have a private tarred airstrip for fly-in guests.

With the recent expansion of the reserve, the opportunity to create a luxury leisure camp and a volunteer program arose, enabling us to offer a more diverse guest experience.

The reserve straddles both the Boekenhout and Pienaars Rivers including a 70 acre dam, and is made up of sweetveld as well as mixed bushveld, providing an abundance of wildlife. It is home to the big 5, as well as cheetah, hippo and diverse bird life, especially water birds.

We are acutely aware  that unless conservation includes neighboring communities, it is viewed by them as being frivolous entertainment for the wealthy. With our volunteer program, we hope to expand our community outreach programs even further. We are also home to the Limpopo Field Guide Academy

The biggest impact on conservation is human/animal conflict and the resulting loss of habitat. Unless conservation can sustain communities more effectively than conventional farming or industry and other human land uses, it is doomed. We are endeavoring to find  a working model that is beneficial to both in an ethical and sustainable way. This way we can expand habitat.

Mongena Game Reserve forms part of the greater Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve.
