There are definitely several reasons why South Africa is one of the worlds most famous travel destinations and why people keep coming back once they experienced it. It doesn’t matter if you want to see a herd of elephants roaming around in the early morning sunshine or observe a pride of lions relaxing after having a feast – it is possible to experience all this in the newly built camp of the Horizon Safari Co.

It is located in a novel area of the Dinokeng Reserve and has all you need to have an incredible experience in this wonderful country: beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the big five of the African continent and lions roaring in the distance while sitting around a cozy campfire.

I’ve worked at this program for almost  weeks in total, helping out removing old fences and pipes from the newly opened area where we started building up and remodel the camp – definitely worth the trip! The people are lovely and always up to something , it never gets boring, so if you want to have the time of your life go and pack your bags and visit the guys at Horizon Safari.

My two week volunteering trip at Horizon’s tented camp was an unforgettable experience that threw me straight into the heart of the South African bush. Helping renovate the camp during my stay and seeing the quick progress was incredible.

The day’s were spent fixing up the camp, doing maintenance in the surrounding game reserve, and going on game drives and searching for animals in between. The nights were spent around the fire, having a few drinks, and listening to the chorus of various animals calling just outside the camp. I had visited South Africa  two years prior, and both experiences were absolutely unforgettable and indescribably fulfilling.

If you’re looking for an escape from reality, or a trip to redefine what’s important in life, this is absolutely your place. My visit at Horizon Safari Company was truly unforgettable and I can promise that you won’t regret it if you choose to stay with them as a part of your South African adventure.

My friend and I volunteered at Horizon Safari Company in the Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve near Pretoria for a week in February 2018, and had a really great time. After previously volunteering at the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary and Wildlife Act, I was looking for something more hands on where I can actively contribute to visibly make a difference in the conservation space. Horizon offered this, the aim of this project being to rehabilitate a 3600 hectare cattle farm and amalgamate it with the Dinokeng Game Reserve.

During our time there we worked on clearing old poly pipe used to run water for livestock, sawing up and removing sections from the bush. We also cleared old boundary fences and removed wire left from old fence lines throughout the property. New fence lines were also built, as well as weeding and pruning as required. As volunteers we also got to assist with the restoration of two old farmhouses which are to be used as future volunteer accommodation. I look forward to going back to see how the project progresses. It wasn’t all work though, travelling to and from our work locations several times each day also meant lots of game drives and fantastic animal sightings – if like me you’re into your wildlife photography, you will really appreciate this.

The accommodation is the most comfortable I have had so far as a volunteer, with home cooked meals provided, and an entertainment room and swimming pool also situated at the camp.

Knowing that we are contributing to bigger picture conservation in Africa, assisting with game reserve expansion and providing viable land areas for wildlife, is something I have learnt through my previous trips is vital for the sustainable future of African wildlife. Being able to assist with this by volunteering with Horizon was a very fulfilling experience as a volunteer, as well as a lot of fun.
